Vitamin C Serum

Español 日本語

Today, I would like to show you how to make a Vitamin C Serum.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that reduces the damage caused by free radicals, which are the cause of premature skin aging.

Vitamin C is super effective in reducing wrinkles, due to its ability to stimulate the growth of collagen and also reduces the dark spots caused by sunlight.

Here is the recipe, so you can start immediately.

  • Amount to prepare: 30ml
  • Refrigerator storage: 1 week

Tools

  • Measuring cup/beaker: 100 ml
  • Heat‐resistant container: 1
  • Amber glass bottle with a dropper*: 30 ml
  • Tablespoon: 1 (15ml)
  • Teaspoon: 1 (5ml)
  • Pot (for water bath): 1
  • Cooking Thermometer: 1

* You can use any kind of bottle, but the Amber glass bottle is recommended since vitamin C is light sensitive and can oxidize quickly. These bottles will protect contents from UV rays and are ideal for light-sensitive products.

Materials

  • Rose water: 1 tablespoon
  • Ascorbic acid powder (Vitamin C): 1/2-1 teaspoon
  • Glycerin: 1 teaspoon
  • Aloe Vera gel: 1 teaspoon

Steps

  1. First of all, wash thoroughly and disinfect all tools with ethanol.
  2. Add the rose water in the heat‐resistant container.
  3. In a pot, put some water and put the heat‐resistant container in it to heat it in the water bath. Let it warm until it has a temperature of 50 to 60 degrees. Do not let it boil. It is simply heated to dissolve the ascorbic acid.
  4. When the rose water is heated, take it out of the pot with care so that the water does not enter the measuring cup.
  5. Add the ascorbic acid to the rose water and dissolve.
  6. Then, add the glycerin and aloe vera gel and stir.
  7. Finally, you can bottle it up.

I usually apply the serum after a hot shower, since that is when the pores are more opened. I spray with a toning lotion, and then I apply the serum on my face, neck and décolleté.

From time to time, I also apply it to my arms, since I have some dark spots.

In Japan, we usually bathe at night, so this routine is perfect because it is at night when the cell regeneration occurs, due to the increase in the secretion of growth hormone when we sleep.

I hope you enjoy this serum, but keep in mind that ascorbic acid can be a bit strong for certain people, so if you notice itching, redness or a tingling sensation when you apply it, you should stop immediately, or try less amount of ascorbic acid and perform a patch test and be aware of any changes for 12-24 hours.
